Planning a fabulous New Zealand road trip over the university summer break? NOW IS THE TIME to think beyond the route.
The best campsites, campervans, ferry crossings and holiday parks can disappear quickly, especially between late December and early January. Leave everything until the last minute and you could face higher prices, limited vehicle choices or a very long detour.
The good news? With the right booking timeline, you can enjoy a fresh, flexible adventure without blowing your student budget.
First, choose your travel dates carefully
New Zealand’s busiest road-trip period generally runs from mid-December through February.
The absolute peak is usually the last two weeks of December and the first two weeks of January. This period includes Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and the summer university break, so demand rises sharply.
For the upcoming 2026–27 summer, key public holidays include:
- Christmas Day: Friday, 25 December 2026
- Boxing Day observed: Monday, 28 December 2026
- New Year’s Day: Friday, 1 January 2027
- Day after New Year’s Day observed: Monday, 4 January 2027
Regional anniversary days can also create busy long weekends. Wellington Anniversary Day falls on Monday, 25 January 2027, while Auckland and Nelson Anniversary Day fall on Monday, 1 February 2027.
Always check the latest dates through Employment New Zealand’s public holiday guide.
University summer holidays vary between institutions, but late November through February is often the main travel window. Check your university calendar before booking, then compare your dates with public holidays and major events along your route.
Could moving your trip by just a few days save you money? It absolutely can.
Your most important booking: the Cook Strait ferry
If your road trip includes both islands, book the Cook Strait ferry before locking in every other detail.
The Interislander and Bluebridge services carry cars, campervans, motorhomes and other vehicles between Wellington and Picton. Vehicle spaces are more limited than foot-passenger spaces, so your ferry crossing needs early attention.
As a practical rule, aim to book four to eight weeks ahead for a summer vehicle crossing. For peak dates around Christmas, New Year and long weekends, book even earlier if your plans are firm.
A few extra tips:
- Compare both operators before choosing your sailing.
- Check the total length of your car, campervan or motorhome carefully.
- Allow flexibility around departure times.
- Remember that Interislander asks vehicles to check in 60 minutes before departure.
- The Interislander crossing takes around three and a half hours, so avoid booking a tight activity immediately after arrival.
- Check cancellation and change conditions before paying.
Bluebridge also asks travellers to provide accurate vehicle length information, including the correct category for campervans and motorhomes.
If you are using a rental car, check the company’s island-hire policy first. Some companies require you to drop off your vehicle on one island and collect another on the other side, rather than taking the rental vehicle on the ferry.
When should you book a campervan or rental car?
For a late-December or January trip, book your campervan or rental car as soon as your dates are confirmed. Ideally, start comparing options several months ahead.
Campervans are especially popular during summer because they combine transport and accommodation. That sounds perfect for a student budget, but it also means the most affordable and fuel-efficient vehicles can go first.
Book earlier if you need:
- A small campervan with lower fuel costs
- An automatic vehicle
- A certified self-contained campervan
- A vehicle suitable for several travellers
- A one-way rental
- A specific pick-up or drop-off location
- A vehicle that can travel between the North and South Islands
Always compare the full price, not just the daily rate. Add insurance, cleaning fees, ferry costs, fuel, campground fees and any excess reduction before deciding.
For a simple car-based trip, you may have more choice, but peak-season availability can still tighten quickly. Book your car before planning non-refundable activities.
Holiday parks, DOC campsites and hostels
Your accommodation strategy should match the type of trip you want.
Holiday parks
For popular summer destinations such as Queenstown, Wanaka, Rotorua, Abel Tasman and Aoraki/Mount Cook, aim to book powered sites and cabins at least four to eight weeks ahead.
For the Christmas and New Year period, book earlier whenever possible. Family-friendly holiday parks often fill quickly, particularly sites suitable for campervans and larger vehicles.
If your route is flexible, book your must-see locations first and leave quieter stops open. This gives you freedom without risking the highlights of your trip.
DOC campsites
The Department of Conservation manages more than 300 campsites across New Zealand, from forest settings to lakeshores and beaches. You can browse locations and facilities through the official DOC campsite directory.
Some DOC campsites are bookable, while others operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Check the individual campsite page before travelling, and never assume that a remote site will have space during peak summer.
Popular Great Walks require even more planning. Milford, Routeburn, Abel Tasman, Kepler and other Great Walk bookings can open months ahead and fill quickly for summer dates. Check DOC’s Great Walks booking information as soon as you decide on your track.

Hostels and budget accommodation
Hostel dorms can be a brilliant option when you want a central location, a kitchen and the chance to meet other travellers.
For peak summer, aim to book hostels two to six weeks ahead. In Queenstown, Wanaka and other popular destinations, four to eight weeks is safer, especially if you are travelling with friends and need several beds together.
Look for flexible cancellation terms. A slightly higher refundable rate can be worthwhile if your route is still changing.
The student-friendly alternative: travel in the shoulder season
Can you travel outside the main university break? Explore March to May or September to November.
These shoulder-season months often bring fewer crowds, more accommodation choice and prices that can be 30–50% lower than peak summer, depending on the destination, dates and property.
March to May can offer warm days, beautiful autumn colours and a calmer atmosphere. September to November brings fresh spring scenery, although weather can be more changeable.
Shoulder season is ideal if you want to:
- Spend longer in each destination
- Find cheaper hostel beds and holiday park sites
- Avoid packed roads and attractions
- Enjoy better choice when hiring a car or campervan
- Book closer to departure without losing all your options
You may need to pack for four seasons, but the savings can be a fabulous trade-off.

Stretch your budget with student transport savings
Your student status can help beyond accommodation.
In Auckland, eligible secondary and full-time tertiary students may receive a concession of up to 40% on public transport when it is correctly applied to a registered AT HOP card.
In Wellington, check the latest Snapper and local network requirements before travelling. Student concessions and eligibility rules can change, so apply in advance and carry your student identification when required.
For longer intercity journeys, compare individual fares with the InterCity FlexiPass. It is an hours-based pass covering InterCity’s national network, with access to more than 600 destinations. FlexiPass can also include Interislander ferry travel, making it worth comparing if you are travelling without a car or combining bus travel with a ferry crossing.
Remember: local transport concessions and FlexiPass have their own terms. Your ISIC card may help verify that you are a current student, but always check the operator’s eligibility rules before purchasing.
